Ha`Makua traces his family’s heritage in Hamakua back thousands of years; principally in the settlements and villages of Waipio Valley (the Valley of the Kings) and Mokupuni o Hawai`i e Hamakua. After creating successful connections on the Island of Hawai`i, Ha`Makua heard the call back to the traditional ways, back to his heritage as a Kanaka Maoli e kahuna Lapa’au Oli.

The traditional Hawaiian concepts of Ho`oponopono (conflict resolution), Lokahi (unity) and Aloha (love) were instilled in Ha`Makua as a youth; as he watched his grandparent’s and parent’s leadership in activities on the local, island-wide, world-wide and spiritual levels.  He learned how to perpetuate Hawai`i’s traditional ahupua`a systems – i.e., how to care for and sustain earth’s precious resources. He learned how to become a konohikinui (great head man of an ahupua`a), to fish and hunt, to tend cattle, to farm kalo (taro) and medicinal herbs, and to gather and feed people. He ultimately, learned the underlying economic principals and essential elements of life that allows all people to live a pono (righteous) life – without having anything; knowing how to view the concept of “wealth” in terms of resources (be it: natural, intellectual, emotional, or constructed) rather than simply the possession of money; and knowing that all Ke`Akua’s (God's) creations are connected by pure energy.

Ha`Makua is a Whisper – not just a dog, horse or ghost whisper, the kind that you see on television, but one who read animals, plants, trees, and people. He helps to bring peace through forgiveness to one’s self, to keiki (children), to Nakane and Wahine (males and females), to `ohana (families), to community, and to the honua (earth-world) at-large by teaching techniques based in ancient wisdom. By sharing the knowledge he has learned, he helps kids get off drugs, and stops abuse of women, children, and alcohol by protecting people – even from themselves. He is able to hone in on what will inspire a person and easily get them on their life’s path. As Ha`Makua says, “When you have inspiration, all the rest comes to you.” He brings the real story out of people and then gets them, seemingly effortlessly, and righteously living their truth with honor and respect for themselves and others.

Ha`Makua sees himself, in his words, as “one to serve to the maka'ai'nana (people who tend to the land and water) ”; but this humbleness belies his efforts. Through his life experiences, he went through painful times and witnessed many of his friends and extended family on a downward path; and, while on this road, he became a loving spiritual man; feeling “no shame” in teaching and sharing the real Alo’Ha (love). His ultimate goal is ho`okaulike e nui mana a ke`akua e kanaka i pu`uwai – bringing balance, with the strength of god, to each person’s heart – bringing back the time when everything from human beings to inanimate rock were spiritually connected – to a time when we can all equally and unconditionally give and receive with pure hearts – through the Alo`HA Spirit.
